Four More Days

I can't believe I have only four more days to wait for the release of BABIES IN THE BARGAIN.

I've already received a whole box of paperback copies and I held a book signing yesterday before the official release of my book. So why the stress? The anxiety that burns my stomach and dries my throat? Is it part of my nature to take every thing to heart, to grind my teeth or bite my nails while waiting for others’ approval?

Babies in the Bargain, sweet and spicy medical romance, coming to The Wild Rose Press on Jul 03, 2009.

Short Synopsis:
With only one year left to complete her medical training in Neonatology, Dr. Holly Collier vows not to let anyone mess up her sacrosanct schedule. Especially not the drop-dead gorgeous Dr. Marc Suarez who broke her heart seven years ago.

When a tragic accident transforms the carefree playboy into a dedicated but novice father to his nephew, Holly gives in to her maternal instincts and turns her structured life upside down for the orphaned preemie. But can she learn to trust Marc again and believe in true love?

Excerpt:

All he needed was a hug from a caring friend. She heaved a deep breath, inhaled his healthy masculine scent and a hint of lemon fragrance, and wrapped her arms around his shoulders. “You’re welcome, Marc. Holler if you need me.”

Marc narrowed his eyes, her last words churning in his guts. “Ah, I need you, all right.” He brought her hard against him.

She threw her head back, eyes wide and turquoise. A bewildered expression spread over her face, but her limpid gaze reflected the same desire that simmered through his blood.

The wrong time, the wrong place, the wrong reason.

His brain screamed no. His body tensed, throbbing against her softness. “Damn it, woman. I need you so much.” He lowered his head and met her parted lips.

“Oh Marc,” she murmured, their hearts drumming together as she laced her fingers behind his neck.

He crushed his mouth to hers. Hunger and despair mingled in his demanding kiss. She responded with the same passion he’d tasted seven years ago. The same fervor he’d eagerly wished to recapture in the last few weeks.

She pulled back to drag in air. His lips abandoned hers and trailed along her jaw, while his fingers played with a lock of her hair. She didn’t move out of his embrace but met his gaze with a question in her eyes.

He groaned and squeezed her against him. She was his anchor to sanity. Blocking the memory of last night, the agonizing hurt, he let his lust submerge his pain. Without hesitation, without taking the time to tease or taste, he devoured her lips like a starving man.

Seychelles: Islands of Love

The Seyshelles consist of two-hundred islands located in the India Ocean, west of Africa.

The capital, Victoria, is in the island of Mahe that boasts some of the most beautiful unspoiled beaches in the world.

I ate the most delicious fish in Mahe. Delectable salads often contain octopuss and coco-de-mer fruits.

Transportation between islands is by ferry, hydrofoil, or small planes. We use this plane to go to LaDigue island. But it got stuck in the mud and on the way back, we all had to go down and push to get it going.

Within the islands, we used a cart pulled by an ox to move around.

La Digue is famous for its granite cliffs that sparkle in the sun and for its giant turtles.

The coco-de-mer is a huge tree with a straight trunk about twenty-five to thirty metters, fan-shaped leaves and large nuts or seed which centre enormous fruits ten to fifteen kilos. The coc-de-mer trees are hidden in a forest called la Vallee de Mai, hidden in the heart of the island of Pralin.
The coco-de-mer flowers are either masculine or feminine. The male blossoms are a mass of tiny yellow honey scented flowers resembling a big virile member.
The nut looks very much like a female pubis. a Seychelles legend says that coco-de-mers meet and mate on stormy nights, and that it's unlucky for human beings to be present.

This female coco-de-mer was given to us as a gift, apparently a valuable gift. My husband had it stored in a plexiglas box to preserve it.

  • Short Synopsis:
With only one year left to complete her medical training in Neonatology, Dr. Holly Collier vows not to let anyone mess up her sacrosanct schedule. Especially not the drop-dead gorgeous Dr. Marc Suarez who broke her heart seven years ago.

  • When a tragic accident transforms the carefree playboy into a dedicated but novice father to his nephew, Holly gives in to her maternal instincts and turns her structured life upside down for the orphaned preemie. But can she learn to trust Marc again and believe in true love?
Excerpt:

Marc stared at the infant suckling and the gorgeous woman feeding him as if he was her own child. A perfect picture of maternal love. For a moment, he imagined her in a silk dishabille, baring a breast to a hungry child, while his knuckles caressed the baby’s cheek and the mother’s flesh in the same loving gesture.

Blonde and lovely Holly.

Mesmerized, he sucked in a deep breath and squatted beside the rocking chair, clenching its arm with itching fingers.

Paulito needed a loving mother, but even with imaginative effort Marc couldn’t picture himself married. At least not yet.
Holly could be the closest thing Paulito would ever have to a mother, if...

“Move in with me,” Marc whispered.

“What?” The bottle dropped from her hand. Her gaze shot to him, incredulous and bewildered.

“What did you say?” Her voice lowered to a rough murmur.
“Come live in my condo,” he said, with a firm tone to convince himself his request wasn’t completely crazy.
His eyes strayed over her blushing cheeks, her parted lips. He inched closer, unable to resist the sweet temptation...then jerked backward.

Conflicting feelings twitched his insides. His baby needed Holly, the best mother in the world. If she agreed to live under his roof, he swore he’d never take advantage of their proximity in the same house. He’d behave like a gentleman—even like a monk—to make her forget his playboy reputation. And he’d battle his attraction to Holly every step of the way, so as not to scare her away.

“Are you crazy?” Her jaw sagged and her eyes rounded, two beautiful turquoise pools shimmering with uncertainty.

“I’ve never been more serious in my life.” He stroked the baby’s scalp. “Paulito needs you and you love him.” It was the only possible way he could give his son a loving mother...and protect himself from a noose around his neck and his Abuelita’s nagging.

She exhaled, her gaze following his fingers’ gentle motion on Paulito’s head. “Of course I love him, but I have my work. I’m as busy as you, if not more.” Her lips pinched as she narrowed her eyes.

“If you move in with me, we could dovetail our shifts and share his care.”

Please, Holly, say yes.

“You and me, living together? Just like that?” She flipped her hand open. “How could you even think about it?”

“Oh, I didn’t mean to imply any...hmm.”

Never.

He blinked. The thought had filtered through his mind, but to his credit, he’d discarded it right away. “It’s just a roommate arrangement. Consider it a business proposal, cross my heart.” With all due respect and no hanky-panky, so help me God.

Marc gazed at her with deep longing. This arrangement would torture him for sure, but to have Holly caring for Paulito, Marc would squeeze every bit of lust out of his system. He silently vowed to maintain his part of the bargain if she agreed.

First Impression of Belarus

A few years ago while traveling to Belarus on business trips, I fell in love with the country. While writing my book TO LOVE A HERO, I practically lived again my fabulous trips to Belarus.

My story highlights the hospitality and warmth of the gorgeous and gallant Belarussian officers who sing, toast with vodka and make a woman feel like a goddess. When reading about the sizzling romance of an American chemist with the gorgeous Major General of Belarus, who made her pulse race and stole her heart, I hope you will discover a new country and interesting culture.

Excerpt:

“We’re going into the city now,” Tania announced as they left the countryside and entered the outskirts of Minsk. The car steered from the highway to a broad avenue. The traffic grew and the streets swarmed with a colorful mix of civilians and militaries.

Cecile blinked, perplexed by the number of uniformed men strolling down the sidewalks. Banners extended across the width of the avenue and a cluster of people hid from the wind under a plastic shelter.

Tania lowered the driver-side window, allowing an alcohol smell to waft into the vehicle. “Few Belarusians own cars. The bus stations are always crowded. You often see people eating sandwiches or drinking vodka while waiting.” The van stopped in front of a modern high-rise. “This is Hotel Nievol and down there, Szwifloch River.”

Roussov dashed out of his Jeep to open the van door for Cecile. “It is our most luxurious hotel. I hope you will be comfortable here. Have a good evening, Dr. Lornier, Mr. Gordon.”

In the lobby, Cecile rubbed her gloved hands. The marble floor, flickering chandelier and old furniture created a dark ambiance, even at three o’clock in the afternoon.

After taking care of their reservations, John said, “Cecile, I’ll see you at six-thirty in the lobby. We’ll have dinner at the second floor restaurant. Tania, we’d like you to join us.”

Tania nodded. “I will wait here.” She raised a questioning gaze toward Cecile. “Unless…Dr. Lornier would like me to help her unpack?”

“Sure. I can use some help,” Cecile hastened to reply. She wouldn’t leave Tania waiting alone in the cold lobby.

They juggled the suitcases into a narrow elevator and stopped on the fourteenth floor. Cecile struggled to open the door with the oversized key. With Tania’s help, she dragged her suitcases into the bedroom.

The room felt as cold as the North Pole. A crisp chill seeped through the thin gaps of the window frame. Freezing, Cecile rubbed her hands.

Tania gave her an apologetic smile. “I’m sorry, there is no heating. Our government allows heating only in the winter months, from November first to April thirtieth. But maybe I can do something.” She tucked a pillow against the windowsill for insulation, then pulled a wool blanket and bedspread from one of the twin beds and piled them on top of the other bed, building a warm cocoon. “This way you’ll feel warm tonight.”

Cecile went to inspect the bathroom. Nice, quite elegant with green tiles. Hmm, the toilet paper is brownish, looks like sandpaper. She touched it. It felt like sandpaper. Thank heaven, the faucet delivered hot water. She sighed with relief.

“Mr. Gordon mentioned you fell at the airport. How are you feeling now?” Tania asked.

“Much better, thank you. But my back is still sore.”

“I wouldn’t mind falling into the arms of our Major Generalle.” Tania giggled. “He is sooo handsome. Every woman in Minsk is a little bit in love with him. He is our big hero.”

“His wife doesn’t mind?” She fumbled with the lock of a suitcase, waiting for Tania’s answer. But of course she wasn’t interested.

“He’s been a widower for some time. They never had children.”

“I see.” Cecile released the breath she’d been holding. She opened her luggage and organized her bottles of water in the refrigerator.

“You brought only dark suits, Dr. Lornier?” Tania asked as she hung the severe attire.

“Of course. They’re suitable for meetings and conferences.”
The girl fixed a stunned gaze on her. “What are you wearing in the evening? After work?”

“I’m here only to work.” She had come to Minsk to set up a laboratory and fulfill a contract, not to go out and waste time. At least, that was her plan, the plan she’d carefully devised while sitting for long hours in the plane. So why was she scowling at her outdated wardrobe?

“Just work?” Tania’s lips drooped in a grimace. “Maybe I can take you shopping?”

“I doubt I’ll have time for shopping.” On second thought, she could make time if the General… Forget it. Remember the mess with Rob. Never again would she muddle business with personal fun. You’re here to work, work, work. “How do you say ‘work’ in Russian?” She should learn the useful word.

Robota. You’re not married, Dr. Lornier?”

“No.”
“You should have some fun in the evening, after a whole day of robota.” Tania shook her head as she folded a beige turtleneck.

Cecile shrugged, preferring not to discuss her social life, or lack of it. The excitement of the trip was enough to alleviate her loneliness and break the monotony of her work.

“You wouldn’t understand. I really love my work.” Ignoring her driver’s scowl, Cecile watched the freezing rain batter on the windowpane. After her extraordinary encounter with the general, nothing could be boring about work and the new project. She just hoped he wouldn’t interfere in her professional decisions.

“But still, a pretty woman like you should have a special man,” Tania insisted boldly.

Wrapping her arms around herself, Cecile remembered brawny arms and a steel chest. A special man? Hadn’t she met one a few hours ago? His sensual mouth had fanned a warm breath close to her face, scalding her all the way to her toes.

Cecile lowered her eyes, recalling the feeling of his body against hers and the smell of his after-shave. He had been gallant and courteous.

Actually too gallant.

His lips had lingered on her hand, long enough to melt her apprehension and boggle her mind.
The image of her virile savior danced behind her closed lids, increasing her anxiety. A special man. None other than the Major General, the hero of Belarus she’d have to impress with her work.

She pursed her lips in defiance. Whether he liked it or not, the handsome general would have to work with this woman.

Father's Day

{Pictures of Fort Lauderdale seen from the Intercoastal and from the ocean }

Today in the US we celebrate our fathers.

For some it’s a joyful celebration and a family gathering with brunch or dinner. For others, the day brings back sweet memories as we remember our dads. And yet, there are some, like a friend of mine, who would rather not think about that day.

In my family, my husband will be honored by our children and grandchildren as we go out to have brunch together. We treasure those moments when the little ones present him with cards, flowers or “art” made especially for him.

  • My father passed away years ago, but I always remember him during the week preceding Father’s day as his birthday fell near by. I have a framed picture of my father, sitting at his desk, writing or reading, piles of paper concealing the wood surface. He was a professor and a writer with more than twenty published books. My mother was not allowed to fix the clutter on his desk, absolute chaos according to her. He called it his personal arrangement, swearing he could find any paper instantly.

  • For our next contest (#6) tell us what Father’s Day means for you and post it on the blog.
  • MAKE SURE YOU SIGN the mailing list in the box on the left of the post.

  • Here is a list of new books. The others have already been won.

Father’s Day weekend

[Some beautiful pictures and a sunrise in Fort Lauderdale, FL, a city that I love so much]

We had a lovely time today as we celebrated Father’s Day and my grandson’s third birthday. Little David came from Chicago with his daddy to spend the weekend with the grandparents. We took them to the beach with my daughter and her children. It was so hot, in the nineties, but the children had a blast, building castles in the sand. Later on, we brought my mother to my place to share an early dinner.

David blew his candles and we gave him his presents.

But I am the one who received the best gift. A box of pre-ordered copies of BABIES IN THE BARGAIN. You should have seen my smile as I caressed the cover and stared with awe at my book. I even autographed two copies for my son and my daughter. The book is dedicated to my daughter who inspired the story of Dr. Holly, the neonatologist. My daughter read the medical cases and corrected them. Apparently in spite of my best intentions to play doctors, I wasn’t doing a good job at resuscitating babies. Now that she went through my medical prose with a fine comb, the preemies in my book are safe.

I have also ordered several copies of FRENCH PERIL which is now available in paperback at Cerridwen Press. I am waiting impatiently to be able to hold my second book in my hands. As soon as that shipment arrives I plan to take a picture with my three books.

Another good news: TO LOVE A HERO is available at Amazon.com and on sale with free shipping. Here is a video trailer of TO LOVE A HERO. The story is set in Belarus:

Your Dream Place

You all heard the song: I have a dream... from the musical Mamma Mia. My granddaughter loves to sing it and I hum it with her.

We often daydream about going to new places, far away countries or beautiful areas, almost in our backyard.

I have posted here pictures of landmarks. You will recognize:

Opera House of Sydney, Australia.

Carribean Sea at sunset

Pyramids of Egypt

Venice, Italy

Taj Mahal of India

Coliseum of Rome

Acropolis of Athenes

Golden Bridge of San Francisco

Eiffel Tower of Paris

  • Assume you have a magic lamp given to you by a gentle but powerful djin.

If you rub it once, it would transport you anywhere you want.
  • If you rub it twice, you could take your favorite person with you.
  • If you rub three times, it would grant you the thing you want the most.

Wanna play with me? This is our fifth contest. Please post your answer HERE on the blog, don’t email me.

Where do you want to go? It can be any place in the USA or in the world. Tell us why you chose it.
Who would you take with you?

And what is it that you want so badly you are begging the djin
to grant it while rubbing the lamp?

I will start. I am rubbing the lamp once to go to Paris. I absolutely love Paris.

I am rubbing the lamp twice to take my husband with me. In my fourth medical romance, Rx FOR FUN, that will be coming soon my hero and heroine exchanged their first kiss on the to floor of the Eiffel Tower of Paris Eiffel Tower. I want to try that and see if it is as good as I describe it in my romance.

Now I am rubbing my lamp very hard, for the thing I want so badly: my readers to buy my new book, BABIES IN THE BARGAIN, and email me their impressions.

Winners of the fourth contest: yeah, the vodka one.

Loretta Canton and PhyllisC.

Please make sure you have signed my mailing list, choose your prize from the list in the previos posts and email me your address at mona@monarisk.com
